Description#

The Matterhorn is the iconic four-sided peak above Zermatt and Cervinia, split by the Swiss–Italian frontier. Its ridges, faces and history make it one of the most significant alpine summits.

The Hörnli ridge from the Hörnli Hut is the normal route; the Lion ridge is the Italian counterpart. The north face’s Schmid Route is a celebrated serious line. Edward Whymper’s party made the first ascent in 1865.
